To me, there is nothing that says “it’s the holidays” more than a fireplace mantel dripping with stockings. It reminds me of my childhood, sitting in front the fireplace on Christmas Eve, forcing myself to stay away, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the main man in red sometime in the night. We’d wake up the next morning and tear through our packages under the tree, but secretly I couldn’t wait to take down that mysteriously stuffed stocking hanging on the mantel. What memories! But if you don’t happen to have a fireplace mantle to hang stockings from, don’t worry, you can still experience that same magical nostalgia with some crown moulding and a little DIY spirit.
I found this beautiful mantel ledge shelf with hooks elegantly and simply decorated for Christmas on Our Vintage Home Love blog. If you’re looking to make this your holiday centerpiece, place it the room where your family typically gathers and add greenery, bulbs, bows, candles, and of course, stockings. The best part, this shelf system is something you can incorporate into your home décor year round with books, candles, photos, etc. That’s one less thing to take down after the holidays!
You could easily build this crown moulding wall shelf from just four pieces and a few supplies:
These are just dimensions I would use, so buy your materials based on the size of the project you want.
I use prefinished crown moulding whenever I’m working on most of my DIY projects at home. You can buy it at any building supply store like Lowe's or Home Depot. It’s already painted or stained, and it’s so easy to wipe clean – and no splinters or cracks to worry about! There are a variety of moulding profiles to choose from to fit your style. You can use any style of profile of moulding for the front – be as decorative or understated as you want it to be. You can make a generous wide shelf by layering different profiles for a more sophisticated, old-world flavor, or use smaller more narrow profiles for a more modern streamlined look. This shelf attaches directly to the wall to give you a clean floating shelf without brackets.
